Savings choice for 10 million.(Business)

MAJOR changes to savings accounts offered to Nationwide's ten million savers come into effect on Friday.

Nationwide will give savers the choice of picking an account with an initial bonus -- which they will need to move when the bonus runs out -- or going for an account which offers a longer-term competitive, but not top, rate.

Accounts that won't have a bonus include its branch-based Champion range.

This will tie rates to the best top-paying deals (including bonuses) from leading competitors.

New savers will earn 1.41 pc after tax (1.76 pc before) on a minimum [pounds sterling]1,000 from July 1. Savers who already have an account will be unaffected by the change.

With Champion Saver you have to give 60 days' notice before making a withdrawal. It's the same with Champion Isa, but you can make one immediate withdrawal a year.

New customers can earn 1.75pc tax-free with its E-Isa; again this does not have a bonus.

Another new offering is online Isa Issue 1. this easy access internet-based account pays a minimum 2.75 pc taxfree until January 31, 2013. After this the rate will drop to 1 pc.

It is only available to members who run certain other accounts, such as Flexaccount.

Nationwide is also launching a 75-day notice savings and cash Isa account where the rates will be boosted by a bonus. Rates start at 2.5pc.

Court web hunt for car upstages ACC.

A judge surfed the web to check Trade Me prices for second-hand Toyotas before ordering that an accident claimant was entitled to a newer car than planned by ACC.

While judges usually confine themselves to legal research, Judge Martin Beattie took to the internet and said his bargain hunt turned up plenty of two- and three-year-old Toyota Corollas for $20,000 or less.

Robbie Carbin, of Whangaparaoa, in the Hibiscus Coast region of Auckland City, has received weekly compensation since 1989 after injuring his lower back loading baggage as an airline worker. His current payment is around $750 a week.

Mr Carbin, who is in his 50s, suffers chronic pain in his back, neck and legs, and his lower back function is decreasing, particularly his ability to bend, Judge Beattie says in his District Court appeal ruling.

In 2008, after Mr Carbin began experiencing worsening pain getting in and out of his 1992 Toyota Corona, he asked the Accident Compensation Corporation to help to pay for a vehicle with easier access.

An ACC assessor concluded Mr Carbin needed an automatic drive car with features including power steering, a minimum driver's seat height of 600mm, preferably a powered seat adjustor, and space for his three teenage children, with whom he had regular contact.

Various cars were short-listed, the cheapest being $16,000, a 2002 Honda.

Mr Carbin found Corolla sedans _ the cheapest was $23,995 _ would best meet his needs.

But cheaper cars were assessed after ACC suggested _ and later confirmed _ a limit of $15,000 minus the trade-in value of Mr Carbin's Corona.

He had travelled 377,000km in his vehicle and it was estimated to be worth $1000.

The ACC also stipulated the vehicle should be no more than 10 years old and could have up to 100,000km on the clock.

But Judge Beattie quashed the decisions of ACC and a reviewer. He said a 10-year-old car would not have enough life left in it, and so would not meet the requirement in ACC legislation to be cost-effective for the corporation.

While ACC ``may well consider'' it had a policy of helping pay for vehicles up to 10 years old, this did not necessarily meet its statutory obligation to contribute to transport for independence, he ruled.

Because the cars considered for Mr Carbin were priced more than two years ago, new costings were needed, the judge said.

``It is also the case that in matters of this nature, the court can adopt an inquisitorial role'', he said.

``In so doing, I can indicate that on the website of Trade Me under the category of Toyota Corolla Sedan 2007-2008, there are a substantial number of vehicles for sale, all with considerably less than 100,000km on the odometer for $20,000 or less.''

Judge Beattie ordered that an assessor be appointed to identify suitable Corolla sedans no older than five and a half years.

ACC must pay the full price minus the sale proceeds of Mr Carbin's Corona.

A spokesman for Mr Carbin told the Herald he was frustrated by how long the process had taken. A new assessment had been done, but the report had not been produced.

An ACC spokeswoman said, ``While [Mr Carbin] was waiting for his vehicle funding, he had continued to be supported by ACC and he has been receiving various entitlements ...''

ACC says it contributed to buying cars for 223 people in the last financial year, spending an average of $27,659 on each claim.

Some seriously injured clients needed a vehicle bought and then significantly altered so they could drive it from a wheelchair.

The Chinese group buying business is expanding mainly in the country's second- and third-tier cities, CNNIC added.

BTI Systems Announces Network Caching Support for Netflix Video Delivery.

Upgrades to WideCast(TM) Portfolio Provide Solution to Manage Content Flood in Metro Networks

OTTAWA, Ontario, May 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- BTI Systems today announced a software upgrade to WideCast, the content-aware networking platform designed to intelligently manage the massive growth of over-the-top (OTT) content in service provider networks. In response to the explosion of OTT content and delivery services like Netflix, BTI Systems has upgraded its adaptive bit rate protocol support in WideCast. This upgrade ensures seamless delivery of Netflix digital movies, enabling service providers to reduce the bandwidth growth curve and improve the user quality-of-experience associated with this rapidly growing service.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110228/CL55052LOGO )

Today, broadband service providers in North America are faced with the challenge of keeping pace with the mass adoption of OTT services like Netflix and there no signs of this growth slowing down. According to the NPD Group, Netflix accounts for 61 percent of digital movies downloaded, Comcast accounts for 8 percent, and DirecTV, Time Warner Cable, and Apple all account for 4 percent. With BTI Systems' WideCast upgrade, service providers can gain control of accelerating traffic growth in metro networks by transparently caching many content types, including Netflix, by serving it closer to the user instead of streaming it across increasingly congested networks. By using WideCast in the network, Netflix customers can also benefit from an improved experience from their broadband provider. Streaming delivery for movies will start faster with reduced degradation and buffering across the network guaranteeing customers a high-quality OTT experience comparable to similar cable services.

"Given North America's strong adoption of OTT media distribution, we are committed to ensuring our customers stay ahead of the curve with innovative solutions," said Gary Southwell, CTO, BTI Systems. "The addition of Netflix support is just one of the upgrades we are making to our networking infrastructure to provide our customers with a powerful tool which manages and monetizes the delivery of OTT services flowing across their networks."

WideCast brings together BTI Systems' innovation in packet optical transport for metropolitan networks with automatic, transparent caching to improve the delivery of the OTT content for service providers, while simultaneously delivering a better end-user experience and lowering traffic growth rates. The WideCast solution fits transparently into the network with no impact on router infrastructure and instantly improves broadband Internet services for all subscribers without violating the constructs of net neutrality. WideCast is the first integrated network solution for caching that integrates L2 Ethernet traffic insertion, L4 application routing and caching in a compact carrier grade solution.

About BTI Systems

BTI Systems redefines service delivery with its packet-optical service platforms that help over 300 service provider and enterprise customers converge, transition and connect Ethernet, video and wireless data services in their metropolitan networks. Math curriculum software.(Product Focus: A GUIDE TO ONE SEGMENT OF EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY)

MATH INSTRUCTIONAL CONTENT TRANSLATES WELL INTO SOFTWARE, AS IS EVIDENT BY THE HIGH and ever-growing number of titles available. It covers all grade levels and ranges from assessments and interventions for struggling students to edugaming titles designed to reinforce concepts or provide further challenges for gifted students. But math software is not limited to such circumstances; programs that are supplemental to curricula and designed to integrate into everyday classroom instruction are also a large part of the industry. Many are intended not only for use by teachers at the front of the classroom to illustrate concepts and demonstrate processes, but also by students on computers in school or at home, complementing the growth of one-to-one computing and providing flexible individualized instruction. As with most other types of software, math applications are also increasingly moving into the "cloud" by becoming Web-based, reducing or eliminating installation or upgrade costs and allowing students to access the same programs used in class at home, on mobile devices, or anywhere with Internet access. Districts are also afforded more flexible purchasing options through this online, license-based model. Here is a selection of some of the new or recently updated supplemental math curriculum programs, for different grade levels and in various content areas, to consider using in your district.
