Vic: Melbourne is flooded with Afghani heroin
The Victorian government says Melbourne's illegal drug market is being flooded withheroin from Afghanistan.
The number of heroin-overdose related ambulance calls has doubled in the past six months, which Victorian Police Minister ANDRE HAERMEYER says coincides with a 21-fold increasein the Afghani poppy crop since the Taliban's fall.
Mr HAERMEYER says the increased supply is reducing the cost and increasing the purityof heroin, and will lead to more street crime.
Mr HAERMEYER says he's written to the federal government, urging it to spend more oncutting the flow of heroin into Australia, and described Australia's coastal surveillanceas a farce.
He says the Taliban regime cut the country's annual poppy crop to 185 tonnes beforethe September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, but it's increased to 3,400 tonnes since theregime was overthrown.
